Job Description

The Assistant Reactor Manager - Physics directly assists the Reactor Manager in carrying out the Reactor Manager duties of managing the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of the nuclear research reactor. This role is part of the Reactor Operations group within the University of Missouri's Research Reactor (MURR).

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer the Nuclear Material Control and Accountability Program
  • Assure fuel quality and safety precautions by means of inspections for leakage
  • Supervise the reactor fuel inventory
  • Perform computer modeling in support of reactor utilization and license amendments
  • Determine the reactivity worth of all sample materials and ensure samples are within limitations
  • Manage the fuel cycle within MURR.
  • Manage the Physical Security Program according to U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission regulations and function as a liaison with the University of Missouri Police Department
  • Provide or approve an Estimated Critical Position for any reactor startup following a shutdown in which fuel handling has taken place
  • Effectively lead one direct report who performs extensive computer modeling
  • Effectively train licensed operators on how to safely operate the reactor from a neutronics and fuel safety perspective
  • Oversee MURR's efforts to convert from high enriched uranium to low enriched uranium fuel
  • Manage and implement the material change for MURR's control blades including all supporting design considerations, vendor interactions, modeling, testing, and approval documentation
  • Perform Senior Reactor Operator duties as needed
Salary

$85,000 - $105,000

M-F 8-5 + some weekends on call and call backs as necessary

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 5 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary
  • Additional licensures are necessary as required by regulatory authorities
    • Possession of a valid Senior Reactor Operator's License by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is necessary or ability to obtain the license within one year
    • Must be able to meet the health requirements of American National Standard ANSI/ANS-15.4-2007.
    • Must meet the security requirements of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, including FBI identification and a criminal history records check based on fingerprinting.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Nuclear Engineering, Master's degree is preferred
  • Significant experience in MCNP modeling
  • Significant experience in COMSOL, RELAP, PARET, and HEATING modeling is a plus
  • Excellent leadership, communication, interpersonal, and management skills.
