Job Description

Title: Process Development Engineer III-IV

Reports to: Process Development Director

Location: Kings Mountain, NC, USA

Join a growing Process Development team to accelerate Albemarle's Lithium GBU growth plans for new materials, new lithium resources and new production processes through rapid development and scaleup, using flexible resources & facilities, both internally and externally.

This group links research and commercialization, developing the manufacturing processes at an intermediate scale to enable commercialization of new materials, utilization of new lithium resources and major production process improvements. The group's portfolio is developed via significant interaction with multiple stakeholders, including strategic business planning, R&D, hydrogeology, process technology, quality, manufacturing and project engineering.

This growing group needs multiple Process Development Engineers, as well as program leaders. The group's portfolio will be dynamic and complex, adjusting to priorities and schedule urgency, and requires the ability to identify and answer those critical questions that will drive decisions and generate reliable process information for the commercial design and implementation.

Individual candidate experience and career development path will factor into specifics for roles, responsibilities and salary levels. Unit operations could include: high temperature kilns, specialized filtration, crystallizers, centrifuges, dryers, ion exchange, metal deposition, powder synthesis and handling, inorganic and organic reactions, morphology control, inert atmospheric handling, metal extrusion and cold rolling, electro-chemistry, etc.

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Exceptional safety leadership and experience with process safety management, putting Safety and Care for employees first.
  • Results-driven, outcome-focused, action-oriented approach with a collaborative operating style that fosters high expectations and motivated teamwork
  • Strong data-based decision making, mental model thinking, problem solving, prioritization, and risk mitigation skills
  • Strategic agility and ability to create or adjust to alternate plans to achieve targets in a dynamic environment

Qualifications/Education

  • Applicable experience, particularly with process development, scaleup & tech transfer, chemical pilot plant design & operation, and technical program management including managing external technology providers.
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or applicable technical discipline. Advanced degrees are also encouraged.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with strong internal customer focus, including interim reports and technology transfer packages

  • Pyro and hydro metallurgical and chemical pilot plant design, scaleup and operation
  • Electro-chemistry processing
  • Program/project management with mixed internal/external, cross-functional teams
  • Process and economic evaluation for multiple options based on conceptual packages
  • High temperature, high purity solid material processing and handling operations
