Goldbelt Glacier Health Services are accelerating care delivery and providing superior force health readiness across the Military, Federal, and Civilian landscapes. Goldbelt Glacier is committed to providing transformative and comprehensive health operational capabilities to support customers across scientific, clinical, technological, and program management areas. We are currently seeking qualified School Counselors (CYBS) to support the Military and Family Life Counseling (MFLC) program.

Summary

School Counselors provide non-medical counseling (NMC) services and additional outreach services through a single Department of Defense (DoD) maintained and operated MFLC program. The standard MFLC counseling approach is psycho-educational in nature, tailored to unique military environments, and helps participants learn to anticipate and resolve unique challenges associated with military life. These services aid in the prevention or reduction of the effects of stressors that may detract from military and family readiness.

Essential Job Functions

School Counselors provide a full scope of behavioral health services (e.g., NMC, training, health, and wellness presentations, etc.) to children of military service members and their families at military installations to ensure military dependents (children and youth) increase their ability to develop strong relationships, solve problems, and adequately express and manage their emotions. School Counselors are assigned to Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) schools and, in some cases, local community schools. School Counselors serve schools for the entire academic year (may range from 9 to 12 months, depending on the school calendar) and may also support short- and long-term camps of varying duration (e.g., weekend camps or weeklong summer camps). School Counselors are responsible for working closely with military branch points of contact (POCs) to ensure that program services are provided within the scope of the contract and meet the needs of the assigned installation. Essential duties, tasks, and responsibilities include, but are not limited, to:

  • Collaborating with teachers, parents, and administrators in order to promote the healthy development of children and youths' social-emotional competencies and capacities.
  • Working with children individually, in classroom settings, and in group activities.
  • Working alongside the program staff and school professionals in their daily settings.
  • Consulting with teachers, parents, and children regarding disruptive or otherwise challenging behaviors.
  • Assisting educators with strategies for cultivating a deeper understanding of the factors that shape young children's social-emotional development.
  • Facilitating referrals.
  • Helping children prepare for life when the parent is absent.
  • Providing support to eligible MFLC children participants during transition periods to help with adjustments to new settings/locations.
  • Interacting with children and parents from the larger military community during special events, such as field days, award luncheons, sports events, parent groups, and center activities.
  • Conducting briefings and presentations, or providing referral resources to participants outside the context of a counseling session.
  • Providing outreach services to parents and the installation command staff.
  • Working closely with wounded warrior transition programs to help children/families cope with stressors and experiences because of a service members' injury or disability.

  • Working knowledge of relevant military, state, federal, and local laws and resources
  • A thorough understanding of the military lifestyle and experience working with military family members
  • Ability to understand, apply, and maintain professional standards
  • Highly developed written, oral, and presentation communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Fluency in the English language
  • Ability to pass all background/suitability checks
  • Master's degree from an accredited graduate program in a mental health-related field such as social work, psychology, marriage/family therapy, or counseling
  • Hold and maintain a valid unrestricted counseling license from the applicable state that grants authority to provide counseling services as an independent practitioner
  • More than 5 years of post-licensure clinical experience
  • Experience with children and youth and specialty in child and adolescent development/psychology
  • Certification or additional training as an Early Childhood Mental Health Consultant
  • School-based counselors must demonstrate past experience working in a school setting or other child/youth services setting
  • Current on all immunizations recommended for adults by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
  • A valid driver's license; ability to travel locally as needed

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MFLC experience
  • Physical ability to support youth summer camp activities, such as bike riding, canoeing, and hiking, for selected assignments
  • Military veterans and spouses
