ENSCO brings 40+ years' experience conducting North American railway research and test programs for Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), passenger and freight railroads. ENSCO, Inc. was awarded a contract to provide research and development, testing, engineering, and training services at the FRA Transportation Technology Center (TTC) in Pueblo, Colorado. As the awardee, ENSCO will support FRA's vision of establishing the TTC as a center for rail and surface transportation innovation. ENSCO will operate and maintain the TTC in support of the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to develop a vibrant, engaging, and modern TTC that fosters innovation, encourages positive change, and creates opportunity. ENSCO will also expand the use of the facility to support other government and commercial entities to achieve the broader mission of transportation safety, security, and innovation. Job Description

ENSCO is seeking a Locomotive Engineer with experience within the railroad industry to provide locomotive operations in support of research, testing and training services to the railway industry in the areas of track; rollingstock; signals and communications; and human factors.


Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Operate locomotives in support of research, testing and training projects to include maintaining train consist speed within +/- 1 mph for certain tests.
  • Inspect locomotives before, during, and after each run to check fuel levels, supplies, and mechanical problems.
  • Monitor gauges or meters that measure speed, amperage, battery charge, or air pressure in brake lines or in main reservoirs.
  • Knows and understands the requirements of FRA Rules and Regulations.
  • Oral communication via train radio with Operations Control Center (OCC) and other train crews.
  • Accountable for compliance of all operating rules, policies and guidelines.
  • Must be capable of obtaining and keeping current engineer certification (FRA requirement).
  • Read and interpret orders, schedules, and other written instructions received from the train dispatcher and discuss their contents with other crew members.
  • Perform switching, assembling and disassembling of trains.
  • Properly and safely engage/release hand brakes and operate rail yard switches.
  • Inspects couplings and air hoses to ensure they are securely fastened.
  • Attend rules and safety classes and ensure all rules are followed as directed by the Company, FRA, and other governing agencies.
  • Inspects freight cars, locomotives, and other equipment to ensure compliance with FRA and Company rules.
  • Utilizes/understand hand signals, two-way radios and cell phones for communication with other train crew members and dispatchers.
  • Prepares accurate daily logs as required by the Company, FRA, and other governing agencies.
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Company.
  • Trains run day and night, so shift flexibility is a must. Shifts may include morning, afternoon, evening, and overnight. Overtime, weekend, and holiday hours may also be required.

Qualifications Required (Skills)

  • Two (2) to four (4) + years' Qualified Engineer experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of FRA requirements specific to the operation and movement of trains.
  • Ability to judge the speed and distances of objects or moving parts.
  • Must be capable of obtaining and keeping current engineer certification (FRA requirement).
  • Ability to react well under pressure in high-stressed situations; accept responsibility for own actions.
  • Observe all safety and security procedures; determine appropriate action beyond guidelines; report potentially unsafe conditions; use equipment and materials properly.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain focus for the entirety of the shift.
  • Ability to build professional and courteous relationships with your colleagues and supervisors
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a diverse interdisciplinary team
  • Must be able to safely climb a 15 foot high ladder.
  • Railroad regulations require that the selected candidate must pass an e-RAILSAFE security background check and online safety tests to work on railroad properties. Wearing safety equipment (hardhat, steel-toe boots, protective vest and protective eye glasses) when working on railroad properties is also a requirement. ENSCO will provide all necessary safety equipment.
  • This safety sensitive position will be subject to drug and alcohol screening

Qualifications Desired

  • Five (5)+ years' Qualified Engineer experience.
  • Experience performing locomotive operations for research, testing or track inspections.
