The team you'll be part of
Nokia Bell Labs is the world-renowned research arm of Nokia, having invented many of the foundational technologies that underpin information and communications networks and all digital devices and systems. This research has produced nine Nobel Prizes, five Turing Awards and numerous other awards.

The Security Research group of the Bell Labs Networks, Services and Security Research lab is offering a position for an experienced security research scientist for its team in Murray Hill. You will be a member of the Security Research group which is responsible for analyzing and researching the security aspects of all kinds of current and future information and communication systems as well as developing novel innovative and potentially disruptive security concepts and solutions. As a high performance researcher you will have the possibility to identify, define and conduct extensive fundamental scientific security research & innovation in a highly collaborative environment.

What you will learn and contribute to

  • Identifying, defining, conducting, and managing relevant security research topics and projects in his/her areas of expertise which is at least one of:

    • Cryptography and theory of privacy

    • Future e2e (Mobile 5G and beyond) network security M&O

    • Security assurance and formal verification

  • Self-guided scientific research with the goal of defining innovative concepts and solutions; related high-quality scientific publications at top security events.

  • Saving own research for Nokia by creating intellectual property rights (patents)

  • Extended networking, consulting, and driving co-operations with internal and external security communities with a focus on the North America region ecosystem (Nokia product lines, customers, external academic research, and industry and governmental organizations like NIST, CTIA, or MITRE)

  • Presenting own and other research by representing Nokia Bell Labs Security Research in internal and external events.

  • Act as a professional advisor and mentor for junior researcher.

Your skills and experience

  • PhD (or at least close to PhD finalization) in computer science, electrical engineering, information theory, or related field as well as a proven scientific record

  • Several years of professional expertise in the area of security with profound knowledge of the market, competition, and academic environment

  • Being a dedicated expert with in-depth knowledge and recognized publications who is well connected to the external scientific security community in at least one of the following security areas of expertise is desired:

    • Cryptography and theory of privacy
      • Quantum-safe cryptography, efficient crypto implementations

      • Privacy enhancing technologies (e.g. homomorphic encryption)

      • Automatic privacy optimization.: balancing intended goal of analytics (e.g. ML) versus privacy &anonymity as well as data minimization principle.

    • Future e2e (Mobile 5G and beyond) network security M&O
      • Hyper programmability and composability of e2e network security controls

      • Hybrid security controls: Local appliances and Security-aaService

      • Integrated dynamic security M&O in a Cloud-native hybrid, multi-stakeholder and zero trust environment

    • Security assurance and formal verification
      • Threat Intelligence formalization and Threat&Risk analysis automation and modelling

      • Formalized security policies, security metrics, and formal methods for verifying security attributes and requirement

      • Foundations of security assurance: automated and optimized security testing, attestation and verification

      • Security certification methods, technologies, and schemas (e.g. Common Criteria; 3GPP NESAS, a.o.)

  • Know-how and experience of security application domains like 5G mobile networks, Industrial IoT, or other critical infrastructure are welcome.

  • Experienced in public co-operations in the context of science forums, industrial or governmental organizations

  • Capability to leverage collaboration options of a mixed environment giving access to Nokia product lines technology and market reality as well as outstanding innovative concepts and disruptive research ate Nokia Bell Labs.

  • Excellent presentation skills and ability to adapt his communication to the needs of the audience.
