Job Description

Overview:

HKS is looking for an experienced and knowledgeable architect to join our Commercial and Mixed-Use Practice. This talented individual will help us build a local presence as we open a North Carolina Office.

The Commercial/Mixed Use Practice Leader acts as a figurehead for Commercial clients in all senses: project ideation, project review, design advocacy, mentoring, design team development, and client attraction and retention, as well as playing a role in defining and communicating the HKS brand. Become an identifiable leader, both externally and internally, focused on the Commercial practice regionally. Provide design enthusiasm and purpose for HKS. Create distinguished design solutions that enable HKS to be considered for the region's most significant projects. Assume a proactive role in business development for the Commercial practice.

Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates an innovative and collaborative multi-disciplinary approach to design as a prevailing cultural attribute at HKS
  • Conveys a command of the factors influencing Commercial design for build-to-suit and office-driven core and shell projects
  • Assumes a proactive stance in communication with all internal and external teams and clients
  • Recognizes opportunities to provide a contextual, sustainable design approach on a range of projects, especially when the opportunity might not be obvious
  • With the entire design team, continually explore, improve on and evaluate new and best uses for technology for presentation and production
  • Coordinates with office leadership on managing overall project budgets and milestone schedules; leading periodic project meetings and presentations; ensuring clients and team members are adequately briefed on projects throughout the planning process
  • Works with the design staff, as well as other leaders relevant to each project, translate concepts into comprehensible, convincing terms providing design direction for clients, designers and other team members
  • Participates in conceptual design for selected projects and participate in development of the design through project designers
  • Develops an expanded practice in Commercial design and planning
  • Acts as a responsible and knowledgeable senior-level "face" of HKS' commercial practice when engaging prospective clients or other influencers, particularly at the executive level
  • Builds a practice by attracting and mentoring experienced staff with a track record of work in the commercial practice. Coach them in business development and marketing to build a group of seller-doers
  • Sets overall project revenue and profitability targets and monitoring performance to meet or exceed them
  • Ensures that the practice evolves in a manner which is consistent with the goals and core values of HKS, as well as the firm's overall goals for development of the Commercial practice
  • Works with practice leaders to develop a plan for acquisition of new Commercial and Mixed-use clients, respectively, that helps further HKS' goals in the practice
  • Partners with office leadership to tailor the plan to the region and local goals
  • Maintains current understanding of the trends, influences and pressures affecting Commercial building design and development in the area
  • Creates visibility for local office within the development and Corporate communities so that the firm will be considered for significant design and planning projects through - active engagement with both community and Commercial practice organizations and activities; leverages existing relationships, enthusiastically conveying to them a compelling picture of why HKS is the firm to consider for future opportunities; speaks and writes about issues of consequence to the Commercial community in the region; works with marketing and PR staff to ensure that Commercial work and visibility is communicated to an regional audience
  • Secures a sufficient number of the appropriate assignments to meet the firm's overall business goals

Qualifications:

  • Accredited professional degree in Architecture
  • Architectural Registration required
  • Typically 15+ years of experience
  • LEED accreditation and / or WELL accreditation strongly preferred
  • Experience working with firms for thoughtful design solutions to complex, larger-scale client requirements
  • Evidence of the ability to attract work through in-depth knowledge of Commercial building trends in the area
  • Confident modesty
  • Genuine business development acumen
  • Knowledge of political, social and economic factors affecting Commercial building in the local market today
  • An established network of influencers who rely on you as much as you rely on them for information and ideas
  • An ability to think strategically
  • Leadership, collaboration, and team-building skills that are obvious
  • Compelling personal presence with strong oral, written, and graphic communications skills
  • Travel will be required
