Brookhaven National Laboratory (www.bnl.gov) delivers discovery science and transformative technology to power and secure the nation's future. Brookhaven Lab is a multidisciplinary laboratory with seven Nobel Prize-winning discoveries, 37 R&D 100 Awards, and more than 70 years of pioneering research. The Lab is primarily supported by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Science. Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) operates and manages the Laboratory for DOE. BSA is a partnership between Battelle and The Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University.

Organizational Overview

ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW
Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) was recently chosen as the building site for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a one-of-a-kind nuclear physics research facility. The EIC will be a discovery machine for unlocking the secrets of the "glue" that binds the building blocks of visible matter in the universe. The machine design is based on the existing and highly optimized RHIC Ion-Ion collider. It will consist of two intersecting accelerators, one producing an intense beam of electrons, the other a beam of protons or heavier atomic nuclei which are steered into collisions. Beyond sparking scientific discoveries in a new frontier of fundamental physics, the Electron-Ion Collider will trigger technological breakthroughs that have broad-ranging impact on human health and national challenges.

From the time of the Brookhaven Summer Study in the summer of 1968 to the present day, Brookhaven National Laboratory's Magnet Division has developed advanced technology in support of science and US industry. Through our in-house expertise in superconducting magnet and cable research and development, including testing and modeling and design, our robust magnet engineering and design capabilities, complex, and state of the art magnet prototyping and testing, we work with our customers to provide customized solutions to applications involving magnets and superconductors. We lead innovation in several areas, from direct wind interaction region magnets that provide the highest precision field quality at an affordable price in interaction regions around the world to partnerships with industry on superconducting magnet and cable testing that is enabling the future of green energy in fusion and wind turbine energy applications and many other areas. With our deep experience in magnet system development, we understand that no challenges are the same and we can engage with our customers across all stages of the development process, from concept, to design, to prototyping, testing and completion.

Position Description

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Our Superconducting Magnet Division has an opening for a Magnet Design Scientist to design, specify, fabricate, and procure superconducting and normal conducting magnets and help design magnet system interfaces. Applicants should be highly motivated to work in a cross-disciplinary environment on R&D and engineering activities related to magnet design and development.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Head magnet development projects in response to the needs of the accelerator ring system specifications and other beam lines in the Electron Ion Collider (EIC):
    • develop magnets and associated component systems from initial concept through computer aid analysis, detailed 3D modeling and design
    • develop purchase specifications and fabrication drawings, magnet fabrication, assembly, testing, installation, and commissioning
  • Participate in other projects in the magnet division, such as the Magnet Development Program, various projects in the Fusion Energy Sciences space, and other projects that require the design of superconducting magnets.
  • Collaborate and contribute to development and execution of funding proposals.

Based upon the needs of the EIC project and successful proposals, there is an expectation to grow a magnet research and development team.
