Job Description
Are you a strong advocate for great design and storytelling in all its forms?

Are you interested in human-centered, mission-focused visual narrative creation?

Are your happiest moments creating alongside team members with skills sets separate than your own?

Are you the type of person that loves to research a design challenge or learn a new software to deliver the most effective solution options?

Are you looking for opportunities to level-up your creative project management skills?

If so, we could make a phenomenal team!

Our Communications Department is seeking a Graphic Designer/Artist, within our Multimedia Design Group, focused on human-centered and mission-focused design challenges. This group of creatives will provide technical staff, Lab leaders, military sponsors and public relations strategists with high-quality multimedia products.

As a Graphic Designer/Artist at APL you will...

  • Join an interdisciplinary design section of hardworking designers, illustrators, video producers, animators, Design Thinking practitioners, and creative staff members.

  • Become a core part of the creative team at the Lab and work with talented teammates to define all aspects of end-to-end visual experiences.

  • Help us craft effective and impactful visual communication materials for internal and external deliverables.

  • Ensure projects are completed with the highest quality and on schedule.

  • Respect branding guidelines while fearlessly exploring cutting edge design techniques.

  • Prioritize and manage multiple projects within design specifications and budget restrictions.

  • Perform retouching and manipulation of images.

  • Guide non-creative teams on design methodologies to help them build interesting and powerful concepts.

  • Need to be comfortable with fast sketching and photobashing in real-time to help with concept development.

  • Generate low-fidelity GUI prototypes (wireframes) to support UI/UX prototypes.

  • Willing and able to travel 20%.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you have...

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Design, Art, Communications, or related field, or equivalent years of experience.

  • 3+ years of professional experience to include demonstrated experience with design, illustration, animation, video, or communications.

  • Excellent organizational skills with high attention to detail.

  • Experience working closely with colleagues to ensure on schedule, seamless workflows, and the delivery of the highest quality products within a cross-functional communications organization.

  • A self-motivated visual storyteller with demonstrated ability to assess situations, collaborate across the organization, make timely decisions, and communicate these decisions clearly, to all levels of the organization.

  • Unquestionable integrity with exceptional communication skills.

  • A portfolio that expresses interest in a wide variety of design disciplines.

  • Have an aptitude for learning and applying new software as required.

  • Proficiency in working with the Adobe Creative Suite and other industry standard design software.

  • The ability to work on both Mac and Windows platforms.

  • Currently hold or are able to obtain at least a Secret level security clearance. Applicant selected may be subject to a Government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

  • Can demonstrate that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. To ensure the safety and well-being of the community, APL has established a policy requiring that all staff be vaccinated against COVID-19. All staff members must provide proof of full vaccination or have an approved medical or religious accommodation by their start date.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you have...

  • Experience any of the following areas: AR/VR, 3D, Photography, Video, Audio, Motion Graphics, VFX, and/or Simulations.
