The Director of Manufacturing is responsible for strategy and excellence across all aspects of manufacturing operations, including day-to-day execution as necessary. As such, this role must be able to recognize the difference between strategy and execution and know when each is appropriate. By serving as a member of the leadership team, this role contributes to overall business strategies and results.

Roles include leadership, management, and accountability; strategic planning; department structure; process control; performance management; and continuous improvement.

Essential Roles & Duties


Leadership, Management, & Accountability

  • Treat all co-workers, customers, vendors, and visitors with inherent respect and professionalism.
  • Implement procedures and systems that fulfill department goals efficiently and effectively.
  • Set measurable key performance indicators for self and team in alignment with company goals.
  • Manage team performance, including hiring and firing as necessary.

  • Research and attend continuing education opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Strategic Planning

  • Participate in strategic planning sessions with other leadership team members.
  • Create and achieve goals and objectives that align with company strategy.
  • Take an analytical and metrics-driven approach to create compelling narratives for solutions.
  • Project manage major initiatives. Define the sequence and timeline of milestones.
  • Participate in creating annual budgets and manage expenditures to operate within budgeted targets.
  • Cascade operational strategy to team members and collaborate on implementation plan.
  • Evaluate manufacturing layouts and ensure adequate space planning to support future growth.

Department Structure

  • Design the department structure of the operations team. Review periodically for effectiveness.
  • Clearly define roles and responsibilities. Create new roles as necessary to support business objectives.
  • Proactively cascade messages, both verbal and written, to ensure all groups are working toward goals.
  • Lead weekly meetings to solve issues and ensure performance objectives and indicators are on track.

Process Control

  • Solve problems systemically. Analyze data for trends and prevent reoccurrences.
  • Create/Revise procedures, work instructions, and forms that are clearly defined and followed consistently.
  • Generate workflow diagrams to document and improve processes.
  • Maintain correct usage of ERP system and be the go-to resource for its usage.
  • Contribute to the development and evolution of business systems.

Performance Management

  • Lead a consolidated and concise dashboard for key performance indicators: capacity, on-time delivery, quality, efficiency, productivity, machine utilization, safety, etc.
  • Oversee the development of and execution to manufacturing schedules.
  • Responsible for a safe and healthy work environment in compliance with company & external standards.
  • Oversee the regular maintenance of facilities and manufacturing equipment.
  • Ensure compliance to external requirements, such as quality management systems (e.g. ISO9001, AS9100, and Nadcap) and government registrations (e.g. ITAR).
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and visually appealing manufacturing area.

Continuous Improvement

  • Lead cost improvement initiatives to achieve on-going operational cost optimization.
  • Utilize lean manufacturing techniques to facilitate continuous improvements throughout operations.
  • Research and support introduction of new technologies and breakthrough processes to accelerate competitive manufacturing advantage.
  • Participate in root cause analysis and support implementation of corrective and preventive actions.

Export-Control : Verify status as a U.S. Person, as defined by 22 C.F.R. Chapter I, Subchapter M, * 120.15. This position will have access to technology and/or information that is export-controlled by the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).

Education and Experience :

  1. Bachelor's degree in operations, engineering, or a related field and a minimum of 10 years of related experience in a precision machining, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Strong working knowledge of Lean Manufacturing principals.
  3. Experience in enterprise resource planning (ERP) software.
  4. Demonstrated performance of continuous improvement activities.
