Job Description

The Alaka'ina Foundation Family of Companies (FOCs) has a potential need for an Epidemiologist to support the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) out of Atlanta, GA.

DUTIES MAY INCLUDE:

  • Plague clinical guidelines:
    • Coordinate publication and further dissemination of plague clinical guidelines.
    • Create practical tools and informational materials for end-users of the clinical guidelines.
    • Provide administrative and logistical support for project meetings to include providing conference call lines, production of agenda and materials for discussion, capture of minutes and action items, and preparation and distribution of meeting summary notes.
    • Coordinate regular communication - electronic and telephonic - with CDC staff, steering committee, systematic review teams, and workgroup participants.
    • Provide logistical and technological support for all working groups, the steering committee, and the CDC project team. Using existing technologies, the contractor will ensure that participants have access to secure, web-based storage for project-related materials, virtual meeting space, and telephonic services.
    • Attend meetings or conferences to inform and engage stakeholders about the plague evidence base and associated plague clinical guidelines.
  • Systematic scientific literature reviews, including analysis of data and preparation of summaries for workgroups and stakeholders:
    • Compile a database of all scientific journal articles related to treatment of tularemia, including those translated from other languages
    • Coordinate translation of appropriate foreign articles through external expert translation vendor or through CDC MLS
    • Abstract data and analyze for systematic evidence reviews
    • Prepare slides and tables to summarize data and present to experts
    • Work with supervisor and peers to co-author a journal supplement on tularemia and bioterrorism preparedness. This will require preparation and logistical management of analysis of data and clear communication.
  • Tularemia clinical guidelines:
    • Following instructions from supervisor, plan and execute Topic Sessions and an Expert Forum on treatment and prophylaxis of tularemia, to include CDC representatives and additional key experts and organizations (e.g., NIH, FDA, AAP, IDSA, ACOG).
    • Communicate with key experts and organizations following the Expert Forum to gather input, solicit document reviews, and coordinate dissemination of the guidelines.
    • Analyze and disseminate post-forum evaluations and communicate results of evaluations with team members and stakeholders.
    • Coordinate publication and further dissemination of tularemia clinical guidelines
    • Create tools and informational materials for end-users of the clinical guidelines.
    • Provide administrative and logistical support for all project meetings to include providing conference call lines, production of agenda and materials for discussion, capture of minutes and action items, and preparation and distribution of meeting summary notes
  • Public health response and research activities related to bacterial vector-borne pathogens and related diseases, namely, Lyme disease, plague, tularemia, tick-borne relapsing fever, and Bartonella:
    • Conduct timely case follow-up in conjunction with local and/or state health departments and other CDC staff or jurisdiction.
    • Provide timely reponse to public and healthcare provider inquiries regarding questions on subject matter or CDC resources.
    • Complete required human subjects research trainings.
    • Under supervision, coordinate phone calls with study investigators, record and disseminate minutes of study meeting within 1 week of meeting, track study progress, develop the study protcol with supervisor, and facilite IRB and OMB approvals and renewals prior to deadlines.
    • Contribute to manuscript preparation (1 - 3 manuscripts) in the form of data cleaning, statistical analyses, and drafting text.
  • Development, implementation, and evaluation/use of online modules for physician education of Lyme disease:
    • Provide project support by coordinating bi-weekly phone calls between CDC and module developers or other CDC internet/provider education resources, and the HHS MIPs program.
    • Provide administrative and logistical support for all project meetings to include providing conference call lines, production of agenda and materials for discussion, capture of minutes and action items, and preparation and distribution of meeting summary notes within 1 week of meeting
    • For any completed modules, collect and track data and perform analysis regarding evaluation of use, module completion, any pre-test/post-test data, and associated metrics.
    • For any modules to be developed, contribute toward development of materials towards definition and description of modules, engage appropriate CDC partners regarding the provider education and internet requirements and development process.
  • Convene an advisory board and to develop and provide materials for ACIP consideration of guidelines for new human Lyme disease vaccines:
    • Communicate with key experts to gather input, solicit document reviews, and develop of summary documents regarding the performance of Lyme disease vaccines for ACIP consideration.
    • Provide administrative and logistical support for all project meetings to include providing conference call lines, production of agenda and materials for discussion, capture of minutes and action items, and preparation and distribution of meeting summary notes within 1 week of meeting
    • Provide logistical and technological support for all working groups and the CDC project team. This project will rely heavily on work performed virtually. Using existing technologies, the contractor will ensure that participants have access to secure, web-based storage for project-related materials, virtual meeting space, and telephonic services.
    • Attend meetings or conferences (at least 3 per year, online or in person) to inform and engage stakeholders about progress toward ACIP recommendations of any Lyme disease vaccine.
  • Public health emergency response, including remote and field-based deployments to assist with responding to pandemics and other emerging threats:
    • Provide administrative and logistical support for CDC Emergency Operations Center activities. This may occur through Incident Management Structure teams or direct support to state and local health departments.
    • Coordinate regular communication - electronic and telephonic - weekly with CDC staff, steering committee, systematic review teams, and workgroup participants
    • Provide logistical and technological support for all working groups, the steering committee, and the CDC project team. Using existing technologies, the contractor will ensure that participants have access to secure, web-based storage for project-related materials, virtual meeting space, and telephonic services.
    • Attend meetings or conferences to inform and engage stakeholders about the tularemia evidence base and associated tularemia clinical guidelines.
    • Assist with drafting text and managing reference files for the guidelines manuscript, collect and collate collate reviewer feedback to support manuscript revisions, and facilitate manuscript submission to eClearance and MMWR.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • At least 2 years of experience in content and materials development, such as manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, website content, educational materials for consumer audiences, social media, etc.
  • Experience in developing strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong writing skills and demonstrated experience in content development are essential.
  • Ability to write content in plain language.
  • Strong problem-solving skills along with outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Energetic team presence with an eagerness to learn and collaborate with other members of the communications team.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize competing demands in a fast-paced environment.
  • Interest in learning complex public health issues.
  • Strong skills with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Prior CDC, public health, or healthcare experience.
  • Experience with data analysis, manuscript preparation, presentation of data to scientific audiences.
  • Knowledge and experience in communicating about vector-borne disease.
  • Experience in developing treatment guidelines.
  • Experience planning, implementing, or analyzing results from formative research to inform communications efforts.

REQUIRED EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS:

  • MPH or Master's in related field such as marketing, communication or public relations, combined with 2 years of experience in communications, public health, OR an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

CITIZENSHIP AND CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to successfully complete & pass relevant CDC security requirements (to obtain proper entry badging).
