Together, we can help people build stronger communities - we're just getting started. **Summary:** At Facebook Reality Labs, we are developing the future of virtual and augmented reality where we envisioned mobile, lightweight AR/VR devices with very low power consumption. To achieve our vision, we need to be able to generate, transmit and store vast amounts of video, images, graphics, audio and other types of data in an extremely efficient fashion. You will be working with a small group of experts specialized in data compression to design end-to-end compression and streaming solutions for VR and AR. The position requires strong engineering capabilities to quickly prototype innovative solutions to challenging problems. Our goal is not just to harness the latest compression technologies, but also help push the limit of compression technology further. You will have chances to participate in the development of future compression technologies that not only benefit VR and AR, but also have an impact on Facebook as a whole or even across the industry. **Required Skills:** 1. Study texture and image compression algorithms to assess overall complexity and impact on quality and power. 2. Build modeling software for custom compression algorithms 3. Build custom software toolkit to help development, test and perform evaluation of different compression algorithms 4. Collaborate with Silicon team to develop architecture specifications for custom compression designs **Minimum Qualifications:** 5. Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a PhD in Electrical Engineer, Computer Science or similar field 6. 1+ year's experience in Mathematics & Signal processing 7. 1+ year's experience in image and video processing 8. Programming experience in C/C++, with algorithm design skills 9. Interpersonal experience: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration 10. Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment **Preferred Qualifications:** 11. Intent to return to degree program after the completion of the internship/co-op 12. Familiarity with texture and image compression standards (ATSC, BCx, JPEG, etc.) 13. Coursework in compression 14. Background in hardware architecture for signal processing applications 15.
