Abiomed is seeking an extraordinary, highly motivated Director of Engineering to lead our & and Sustaining Engineering teams in our Baltimore facility. The Breethe OXY-1 platform is the first fully integrated ECMO delivery system on the market designed for portability, ambulation and simplicity for acute and chronic applications.

A successful candidate must have history of leading and directing cross functional engineering teams in medical device development. This individual must have a strong technical foundation mechanical design, electrical and software engineering integration. This leader will have the opportunity to leverage expertise across the organization, withResearch, Engineering, Regulatory, Quality, Medical, Marketing, and Product Management. The ideal candidate will have a background in product develop within the cardiopulmonary space with expert-level design control, program management, and product development experience.

Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Generate and execute annual R&D plan to ensure objectives and deliverables are met
  • Create Program proposals by defining; project scope, schedule, project risk assessment, and budget.
  • Maintain accountability for building / developing / leading high performing team
  • Manage day to day activities of engineering team for both Sustaining and NPD to include Mechanical Design, Hardware, and Software.
  • Maintain financial accountability for budgeting and tracking
  • Apply and/or develop highly advanced technologies, scientific principles, theories and concepts that may be new to the industry
  • Provide strong organizational leadership and motivation and foster a success-oriented, accountable, high-morale environment.
  • Weekly, Monthly and annual reporting and department progress
  • Achieve commitments to schedule, budget, quality, and cost targets.
  • Perform "after action reviews" and develop lessons learned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's Degreein Engineering(PhD in Engineering or MBA preferred)
  • 10+ years of experience leading Product Development in a medical device or other highly-regulated organization)
  • Experience leading teams of 15 direct reports and up to 10 cross-functional team members
  • Financial / budget experience
  • Able to travel 15%
  • Innovation-minded; execution driven
