Job Description

YMCA International Services is a unique branch of the Y of Greater Houston and seeks to meet the needs of Houston's refugee and immigrant communities. We provide comprehensive programs that focus on building human assets and fostering self-sufficiency. The YMCA International Services seeks a licensed immigration attorney to supervise a team of immigration attorneys, DOJ accredited representatives and other support staff, serving immigrants in the Houston area.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • *Manage and supervise the programs within the Legal Services Department: General Immigration (fee for service program), Crime Victims, Trafficking, Fellowships, and other legal services.
  • Provide training, supervision and support to Immigration Attorneys, DOJ Accredited Representatives, and support staff. This requires fundamental knowledge of immigration law and immigration court procedures.
  • Ensure contract compliance by managing reports and other requirements by funders. This responsibility includes reviewing monthly/quarterly reports ensuring that they are thoroughly and accurately completed, as well as timely submitted.
  • Help recruit, train, mentor, and supervise pro bono lawyers and legal interns for representation on specific cases.
  • Manage caseload and maintain client files in good order. Maintain client and case information in case database.
  • Work closely with Senior Director of Immigration Legal Services in program planning and strategic direction of Immigration Legal Services division.
  • Collaborate with other agencies and service providers to procure client services and network with like-minded organizations.
  • Participate in outreach activities and information sessions for immigrants and social service agencies. Outreach may require occasional evening and weekend events.
  • Perform all other duties as needed and/or as directed by supervisor.
  • Participate in airport pick up of refugee arrivals, some of which may be at night.
  • Admission to state bar; Texas Bar strongly preferred.
  • At least 5 years of experience in Immigration Law.
  • Fundamental knowledge of immigration law and immigration court procedures; public speaking skills; strong writing skills; ability to work well with others and to work under pressure and handle a large volume of consultations, clients, and data; flexibility and strong communication skills; client interviewing abilities; and an appreciation of multicultural experiences.
  • Spanish fluency is highly preferred; fluency in other languages is helpful.
  • Immigration court experience is strongly preferred, as well as experience with asylum, family immigration, and criminal immigration cases.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Self-motivated, detail orientated, well organized, able to prioritize assignments and high workload.
  • Texas Driver's License required; clean driving record; own vehicle; applicable auto insurance. Federal government clearance is required for this position.
  • Desire to achieve YMCA Team Leader or Multi-team/Branch Leader certification (see competencies below).
