Arlington County's (CPHD) Department is seeking a Fire Construction Codes Inspector to join their IAS-accredited, award-winning Inspection Services Division. The Inspection Services Division is responsible for working with Arlington citizens and developers to build and maintain property throughout the County.

The Fire Constructions Codes Inspector ensures that all phases of building construction are done in conformance with codes, ordinances, and approved plans and specifications by performing in-person inspections of new construction and existing properties around Arlington County. Inspectors are expected to continuously maintain and apply their knowledge of applicable State, County, and local fire construction codes, use computers and mobile devices to record the results and status of inspections, and prepare letters and written notices of observed violations.

Specific duties include:
  • Reading and interpreting construction plans and specifications;
  • Performing inspections related to installations, testing, and inspection of fire protection equipment and systems;
  • Inspecting and testing equipment and systems to include sprinklers, hoods, smoke removal, standpipes, firefighter's services, locks, exits, signage, fire pumps, pressurization systems, fire control rooms, and communication systems;
  • Serving as a subject matter expert on fire system code requirements with property developers and owners, architects, contractors, and other County and public agencies;
  • Identifying corrective actions necessary to bring fire protection systems and associated equipment into compliance with applicable codes and standards; and
  • Receiving continuous training on materials, methodology, and code requirements for residential and commercial high-rise inspections.
The successful candidate will be experienced in interpreting State, County, or local building codes and advising others on how to comply with these codes. In addition, they will have excellent communication skills in order to work with a wide variety of people with competing priorities to identify and resolve problems in a fast-paced environment.
Selection Criteria

Minimum Requirements:
Fire Construction Code Inspector I:

  • High school diploma or GED;
  • Three years of experience in general construction or construction trade; and
  • Additional certification requirements outlined in the Special Requirements.
Fire Construction Code Inspector II:
  • Meet the requirements for Fire Construction Code Inspector I;
  • One year of experience in fire safety systems codes inspection or closely related work; and
  • Additional certification requirements outlined in the Special Requirements.
Fire Construction Code Inspector III:
  • Meet the requirements for Fire Construction Code Inspector II;
  • Two years experience in fire safety systems codes inspection or closely related work; and
  • Additional certification requirements outlined in the Special Requirements.
Substitution: Apprenticeship or trade school training related to specialty area may substitute for up to one (1) year of general experience on a year-for-year basis.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:
  • Associate's degree or higher in a related field;
  • Experience in building or fire code enforcement;
  • Experience as a building construction superintendent or foreman;
  • Experience in high-rise/commercial building code or construction; and/or
  • Certification as a building fire inspector.
Special Requirements

1) The employee must obtain VA State ICC certifications as a commercial fire sprinkler inspector and commercial fire alarm inspector within the 12-month probationary period. This is a multi-level position, and the employee must progress through the Fire Construction Codes Inspector series to Fire Construction Codes Inspector Level III within three years of hire and complete all of the required training modules and passing the required examinations to become certified. Below are the list of certifications and associated timeframes to required at each level of this position.

  • Fire Construction Code Inspector I:
    1. Ability to obtain all of the below certifications within 12 months of hire:
      • Commercial Fire Sprinkler Inspector; and
      • Commercial Fire Alarm Inspector
  • Fire Construction Code Inspector II:
    1. Possession of all of the below certifications:
      • Commercial Fire Sprinkler Inspector; and
      • Commercial Fire Alarm Inspector
    2. Ability to obtain one (1) of the below certifications within 36 months of hire:
      • Commercial Building Inspector; or
      • Commercial Electrical Inspector
  • Fire Construction Code Inspector III:
    1. Possession of all of the below certifications:
      • Commercial Fire Sprinkler Inspector; and
      • Commercial Fire Alarm Inspector
    2. Possession of one (1) of the below certifications:
      • Commercial Building Inspector; or
      • Commercial Electrical Inspector
  • 2) A standard County background check will be made on all candidates. Additional background checks may be necessary prior to admittance to secure federal facilities.

    3) The applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of employment, a valid driver's license, and must provide a copy of or allow Arlington County to obtain a copy of the driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.

    4) Completion of the Commonwealth of Virginia Statement of Economic Interest form will be required of the successful candidate upon hire and annually thereafter.

    5) Position requires climbing ladders and going into trenches, walking up stairways, accessing small spaces and spending several hours a day standing and/or walking. Substantial time is spent outdoors or in buildings under construction/renovation in all types of weather conditions.

    This position is part of a multi-grade pay band, and positions may be filled at level I, II, or III based on candidate's experience and qualifications. The salary range at the top of this job announcement reflects the bottom of the Level I range to the top of the Level III range. Following the guidelines for this pay band, employees may earn increases and are eligible to progress through the band after acquiring additional skills, training, and/or certifications or licenses.

    The salary range for each level is as follows:

    • Fire Construction Code Inspector I: $47,236.80 - $72,113.60
    • Fire Construction Code Inspector II : $54,641.60 - $83,449.60
    • Fire Construction Code Inspector III : $58,427.20 - $89,273.60
    Work Hours: Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Occasionally, inspections are scheduled outside of the normal work hours. Inspectors normally begin and end workdays in the office and are required to participate in meetings and task groups.
