Job Description
Position Summary

The Senior Enterprise Cloud Architect is responsible for designing and operating secure computing platforms, networks, in the Institute’s hybrid cloud.  Design, install, upgrade, and continuously improve the Institute’s hybrid cloud infrastructure, and maintain the ongoing reliability, performance and disaster recovery for the Virtual Server Infrastructure and Virtual Desktop Infrastructure. This includes collaborating with the Infrastructure team to monitor the operating environments, servers, and network; responding to incidents, problems and planning for growth.  The Architect is experienced in modern DevOps, Agile software development and implements Cloud architectures that accelerate deployments of micro-services, containers, and APIs, and related management technologies within the Institute’s hybrid cloud.  This role is also responsible for advanced problem diagnosis and resolution required, with a sharp focus on Cloud security and optimizing overall performance.
Designs and configures hybrid cloud solutions based on application needs and anticipated growth, designs and builds new virtual servers.  Has good communication skills and is able to work collaboratively with internal customers and technical colleagues.  Works across all functional areas of the Institute and has a strong customer service orientation to ensure that all service requests and incidents are resolved in a professional manner.  Shares expertise and provides individual training and support. Work with other technical staff and outside vendors to provide top shelf cloud technology based solutions.

Essential Functions
  • Design, maintain, monitor, upgrade, and support the VMWare hybrid cloud infrastructure environments
  • Monitor database performance and recommend changes
  • Monitor and administer storage devices
  • Lead enterprise-wide work initiatives and projects
  • Define improvements that increase system security, reliability, and performance
  • Acts as the technical liaison between the Production Operations, Software Engineering, and Digital Products teams, providing critical operational insight to upcoming implementations and strategies, including validation of ongoing solutions supportability                                
  • Recommend upgrades, patches and updates to production applications and servers
  • Provide support for business critical applications
  • Provide technical assistance when needed to members of the IT Department
  • Prepare project plans; implementation scheduling and coordinate new site installations
  • Document network infrastructure and application processes and configurations
Information Security Responsibilities
  • Attend/complete assigned information security training by the designated completion date.
  • Read and adhere to published ISMS policies and procedures.
  • Report timely any observed violations of ISMS policy - or known encroachments on information security - to your department leader and/or the Information Technology Department.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering (Electrical, or Network) plus eight years’ experience
  • VMWare, Microsoft, and Cisco Systems certifications desired
  • 8+ years hands-on experience administering servers in a large IT environment (>100 servers)
  • 8+ years hands-on experience designing and maintaining enterprise data center infrastructure
  • 8+ years hands-on knowledge of Windows and linux operating systems
  • 8+ years hands-on experience designing, implementing, and maintaining VMWare ESXi environments and VMWare vSphere
  • 8+ years hands-on experience designing, implementing, and maintaining VMWare Horizon View cloud desktop environment
  • 5+ years designing, configuring, and implementing Backup and disaster recovery solutions utilizing Veeam products
  • 5+ years designing private cloud infrastructure, and designing virtual infrastructure in the public cloud utilizing Docker, Kubernetes and cloud management tools
Other Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to take on a lead role executing projects and managing technical project teams
  • Expert knowledge of VMware in a large environment with strong knowledge of VMware clustering, configuration and management
  • Experience with cloud buildout and migration (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes, Apigee) a major requirement.
  • Experience designing and implementing storage systems such as NetApp, HP 3PAR/EVA/LeftHand, Pure, Nimble
  • Experience designing and implementing server hardware such as HPE DLseries, Cisco UCS Infrastructure (FlashStack, Flexpod), and hyper-converged products, such as, Nutanics and Cisco Hyperflex
  • In-depth understanding of network security and access control
  • Strong understanding of network routing and switching protocols
  • Excellent knowledge of TCP/IP, including packet-level traffic analysis
  • Cisco switches and router (Strong Knowledge Required), Palo Alto Firewall, Arisa switches
  • Experience with UNIX (Linux) operating environments
  • Expert level Windows server and desktop knowledge
  • Creative problem-solving abilities
  • Must be a self-starter with desire to excel and broaden the scope of experience and knowledge in infrastructure design
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills
