Description

POSITION SUMMARY The Horizon Scanning (HS) Medical Editor/Reviewer performs technical editorial work on projects for Horizon Scanning. This includes editing and quality control functions such as reviewing work of HS research analysts. The Medical Editor ensures that HS content (e.g., database content, topic and trend profiles, project deliverables) is scientifically and medically accurate, produced to the highest standards of quality, and fully meets project and/or client specifications. The Medical Editor works with the HS director, senior reviewer, project manager, lead analyst, medical copy editors, and others to develop content guidelines, templates, and protocols. The Editor provides feedback and training to new analysts regarding content development. The Medical Editor is expected to maintain knowledge of new developments in HS methods, key clinical priority areas, study design, and important new scientific discoveries in understanding fundamental aspects of disease states. The Medical Editor attends all HS team meetings and participates as a voting member at topic and trends nomination meetings.

Essential Functions Statements(s)

  • Critically review and edit for scientific accuracy HS content, including database records, topic and trend profiles, and deliverable reports developed by HS research analysts
  • Review and edit topic and trend records created by research analysts; provide feedback to analysts and develop initial assessment of how well the topic meets criteria for entry into the HS system
  • Review and edit topic and trend profiles developed by HS research analysts
  • Provide feedback to research analysts about the accuracy, quality, and clarity of their work
  • Provide training to analysts regarding content development protocols and quality standards related to scientific and medical accuracy
  • Maintain thorough understanding of the key clinical research developments and major scientific trends in the client-defined priority areas
  • Apply understanding about U.S. regulatory processes, coverage, coding, payment, etc., to HS content review, editing, and feedback to analysts
  • Apply medical and scientific knowledge to review of HS content and be thorough and attentive to detail, to ensure high-quality project deliverables
  • Attend and contribute to team meetings as required
  • Meet assigned deadlines

Qualifications

Experience:

  • 5 or more years' recent experience reviewing and/or editing healthcare content
  • Broad and comprehensive knowledge of common disease etiologies, processes, and treatments
  • Solid understanding of pharmacology and other treatment modalities (e.g., biologics, cell and gene therapies, devices, surgical procedures)
  • Knowledge of U.S. healthcare system, evidence-based medicine, and healthcare horizon scanning
  • Must demonstrate detail-oriented medical content editing skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to distill highly technical information into content accessible to wide audience
  • Demonstrated ability to meet aggressive deadlines
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, production-oriented environment
  • Must be a well-organized self-starter and proficient multitasker
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) essential
  • Experience with Microsoft SharePoint helpful

Education: Advanced degree in a scientific or medical discipline, such as physiology, pharmacology, molecular genetics, neuroscience, biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, or clinical healthcare professional experience with advanced degree. PhD preferred.

Computer Skills: Proficient with Microsoft Office 2007+
