The Lab Manager of the Ley Laboratory at Cornell Health is part of a larger health care team serving the medical needs of the Cornell University community. A significant amount of the Lab Manager's role consists of administrative and management responsibilities, including system and data management, liaising with the Lab Director on regulatory and operational issues, and establishing and overseeing department policies and procedures in partnership with Medical leadership at Cornell Health and in compliance with NYS regulations. The Lab Manager supervises a team of NYS licensed clinical laboratory technologists, a medical technologist assistant, phlebotomists, an administrative assistant, and several per diem employees, providing general oversight of lab operations and personnel management. Ensuring compliance with NYS DOH regulations for Clinical Laboratory Licensing and serving as Quality Systems Manager as defined by NYS laboratory personnel standards are a critical part of this position. Reporting to the Director of Medical Services, the Lab Manager contributes to the functioning of a vibrant, innovative, collaborative, inter-professional Department of Medical Services composed of clinicians (MD/DO/PA/NP), nursing (RN/LPN/CMA), administrative support, lab, pharmacy, radiology and physical therapy professionals.

Additionally, the Lab Manager serves as a back-up Medical Technologist, working and maintaining competencies in all laboratory sections including, but not limited to: Chemistry, Microbiology, Hematology, Immunology, and Phlebotomy, with the expertise and experience necessary to assume the lead role in any section as needed. In this function, the Lab Manager works independently to process lab specimens in support of patient care, uses computer programs for specimen accession, data entry, and information retrieval, and troubleshoots analyzer malfunctions as needed. Responsibilities include performing miscellaneous technical duties and general laboratory support functions as the need arises.

Success Factors

The Lab Manager will perform their duties with a constant sense of service to both internal customers (staff and colleagues within Cornell Health) and external customers (patients seeking health care), comply with all current NYS, CLIA, CDC, and all other regulations governing Ley Clinical Laboratory operations, and pursue continuing education in laboratory skills to maintain a current understanding of all areas of the laboratory. As a resource for patients at Cornell Health, excellent problem-solving skills and professional judgement are necessary to determine appropriate solutions for issues that may arise. In their role as a leader in the unit, the Lab Manager will operate with a high level of independence and lead by example, to provide strong supervisory support to their team and collaborate effectively with other Medical Services leaders.

Please note: Annual Health and Safety including confidentiality training is provided annually by Cornell Health. This position is OSHA category BBP2, TB2, ERG2. There is no visa sponsorship available for this position.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 4 years' of relevant experience working as a supervisor in a laboratory setting, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Licensed by NYSED as a Medical Technologist, plus a minimum of 12 months training in an ASCP- accredited hospital program. Completion of 12 continuing education requirements to maintain Medical Technologist registration and licensing.
  • Clinical proficiency, efficiency and strong technical skills in all facets of laboratory competencies, including but not limited to Chemistry, Microbiology, Hematology, Immunology, and Phlebotomy
  • Ability to be a positive contributor to and leader of a team-based inter-professional environment with an innovative, improvement-oriented culture.
  • Ability to resolve conflicts with fairness and consistency and diffuse emergency situations with a strong, yet compassionate, approach.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.
  • Experience and/or interest in working in a college-health setting is preferred
