GENERAL PURPOSE
This position will conduct research and develop laser optics, remote sensing phenomena and optical subassembly. Will develop theories on the basis of observation, simulation and experiments, and develop customer specific sensor prototypes and testing environments. Applies intensive and diversified knowledge of optical physics and engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments that affect future organizational objectives. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
•    Perform complex calculations as part of the analysis and evaluation of data, using computers.
•    Describe and express observations and conclusions in mathematical terms.
•    Analyze data from research conducted to detect and measure optical phenomena.
•    Performs optical system, opto-mechanical, and opto-electronic modeling, design and trade studies to assess system performance, evaluate technical alternatives, and select optimal approaches.
•    Report experimental results by writing papers for scientific journals or by presenting information at scientific conferences.   Emphasis on reports and presentations to customers.
•    Design computer simulations to model physical data so that it can be better understood.
•    Collaborate with other team members in R & D and Engineering in the design, development, and testing of experimental, industrial, or aerospace instrumentation, and procedures.  Determine project plan, personnel needs and assign work to meet deadlines assigned.
•    Observe the structure and properties of matter, and the transformation and propagation of energy, using equipment such as masers, lasers, and telescopes, in order to explore and identify the basic principles governing these phenomena.
•    Develop theories and laws on the basis of observation and experiments and apply these theories and laws to problems in areas such as optics and aerospace technology.
•    Develop manufacturing, assembly, and fabrication processes as required.
•    Leads, coordinates, and reviews the work of engineers and technicians as the principal investigator for research and development projects
•    Electronic Test measurement –using oscilloscopes; multimeters; data acquisition hardware, frame grabbers

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY

•    Knowledge of optics, detectors and precision instrumentation
•    Skill in remote-sensing laser optics applications
•    Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work productively with a variety of experts from various technical fields
•    Ability to integrate and analyze information from multiple diverse sources, identify issues, develop solutions and communicate work direction and strategies 
•     Demonstrated expertise in optics, engineering, technical writing and equipment testing
 EDUCATION OR FORMAL TRAINING
•    Master’s degree in related field; Ph.D. in related field
 EXPERIENCE
•    5+ years’ experience in applied physics, material science, or related disciplines
 WORKING ENVIRONMENT
•    Work is performed in an office environment or laboratory.
