The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures in the College of Arts and Sciences at Loyola University Chicago (LUC) invites applications for a full-time non-tenure-track position at the rank of Lecturer, for academic year 2021-2022. The candidate will assume the direction of the Japanese Language and Culture Minor Program. The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures is one of the most diverse departments at Loyola with more than 20 full-time faculty members, over 12 majors and minors, and a graduate program in Spanish. This search is part of a University-wide, multi-year hiring initiative designed to hire outstanding researchers and teachers who are reflective of our diverse student body and committed to interdisciplinarity (i.e., working with colleagues across different subfields and disciplines) and the pursuit of external grants. The Director of the Japanese Language and Culture Program will plan the curriculum, assign courses to the Japanese instructors, supervise student advisement and recruit both high school and college students to the minor. In addition to these administrative duties, the candidate will be expected to teach 8 courses per year, 4 per semester. These may include but are not limited to courses in Japanese Literature in Translation, Contemporary Japan, Japanese popular culture, Japanese Film, and Japanese and Japanese American Women Writers. Loyola seeks to expand interdisciplinary and intercollege collaboration in both research and pedagogy; therefore, experience with interdisciplinary teaching and interdisciplinary curriculum development are essential to this position. The Director of the Japanese Language Program will also develop faculty- led opportunities for Loyola undergraduates to study in Japan, recruit locally and more widely, and establish working ties with Japan-related schools and institutions in Chicago and abroad. Successful grant writing skills are a decisive asset.

The candidate must have a PhD in a relevant field of Japanese studies or philosophy and at least 5 years of experience teaching Japanese language to undergraduates at an American university, native or near-native fluency in Japanese and excellent English communication skills and experience with curriculum development. The candidate will have strong inclusion-related skills, to foster the highly diverse group of students studying Japanese and participating in Japanese extra and co-curricular activities. The candidate should be willing to support the mission of LUC and the goals of a Jesuit Catholic Education.
