Position Information

The Arlington County's Treasurer's Office is seeking a Staff Accountant to assist in the management and administration of Treasurer's Office programs, services, or projects, primarily related to banking activity. This position will also provide management support within the Accounting Division, such as: budget analysis, or short-term special projects. Additionally, this position's work may include, but not be limited to, a wide range of standard professional duties such as: research and analysis, budget monitoring, analysis, problem resolution, outreach, and staff training.

The Treasurer's Office is responsible for all banking and investing activity for Arlington County, including Arlington Public Schools.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Researching and assisting in the analysis of project functions and problems.
  • Reviewing, evaluating and recommending changes to programs and/or services for financial and accounting impact, trends and patterns to ensure efficient delivery of services.
  • Preparing asset, liability, and capital account entries by compiling and analyzing account information.
  • Documenting financial transactions by entering account information.
  • Recommending financial actions by analyzing accounting options.
  • Summarizing current financial status by collecting information, preparing balance sheets, revenue and expenditure statements, and other reports.
  • Substantiating financial transactions by auditing documents.
  • Maintaining accounting controls by preparing and recommending policies and procedures.
  • Guiding accounting clerical staff by coordinating activities and answering questions.
  • Reconciling financial discrepancies by collecting and analyzing account information.
  • Assisting in the development of project contract specifications and/or requests for proposals.
  • Performing coordination and administrative activities.
  • Developing training and informational outreach programs and conducting training/informational program.
  • Performing other related duties as required or assigned by Supervisor.
The ideal candidate will have the following:
  • Reading comprehension to read technical materials.
  • Writing skills to compose and edit reports, recommendations, policies, etc.
  • Interpersonal skills to persuade others.
  • Leadership skills to organize, facilitate, and guide intradepartmental task force.
  • Arithmetic skill to apply statistical techniques in practical situations.
  • Problem-solving skills to define problems and collect relevant information to recommend policy solutions.
  • Ability to research and assist in the development of programs and/or services guidelines.
  • Knowledge of local government procedures and responsibilities.



Selection Criteria

Minimum: Bachelor's degree in accounting strongly preferred or field directly related to program area plus two years' experience in banking, finance, accounting or treasury management.

Preference will be given to applicants with CPA or CPA candidate status.

Substitution: Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.



Additional Information

Work hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
