Role Summary

Applications Engineer 1 is an entry-level engineering role focused on the execution and documentation of laser material processing experiments conducted in nLIGHT's applications lab in Farmington Hills, MI. Applications engineers must be capable of efficiently switching between tasks and able to execute multiple projects concurrently. The ideal applicant is a hands-on problem solver who is self-motivated to address new challenges with enthusiasm for technical learning and personal growth. Applications engineers must exhibit a dedicated work ethic, positive attitude, and strong interpersonal skills as project execution will involve regular interactions with visiting nLIGHT customers. This role will be responsible for programming automated industrial equipment and conducting laser applications experiments under the direction and mentorship of senior applications team members. Relevant engineering disciplines include mechanical, material science, welding, industrial, optical, chemical, and applied physics. It is expected engineers in this role will have a drive for personal growth within nLIGHT's industrial applications team.

Responsibilities

  • Set up, operate, and program robotic and CNC systems to execute laser processing experiments for customer applications in laser cutting, welding, and similar metal manufacturing processes.
  • Develop laser welding parameters through a series of methodical, iterative process development experiments for a given customer application.
  • Document the detailed sequence of iterative process development steps in a format consistent with the scientific method.
  • Use inspection tools, metrology equipment, and metallographic examination techniques to evaluate part quality produced by the processing parameters.
  • Quantitatively and qualitatively assess process performance against customer-provided productivity metrics and quality criteria.
  • Summarize results and findings into a presentation format that enables nLIGHT customers to gain expertise from parameter development experiments.
  • Manage the storage and inventory of raw materials, consumables, and spare parts.
  • Maintain the automated machinery and lab equipment in clean working order.
  • Up to 15% travel to technical conferences or onsite customer process support and troubleshooting.

Qualifications

  • Minimum BS Engineering degree or equivalent
  • Demonstrated application of technical skills toward a team project goal.
  • Effectively contributes to and enjoys working in a collaborative team environment.
  • Demonstrated experience managing project schedules and deliverables.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for customer communication and technical presentations.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude; experienced with hand tools, power tools, precision devices, and metrology equipment.
  • Enthusiasm for manufacturing processes; industrial manufacturing experience a plus.
  • Experience programming CNC, PLC, or robotic systems a plus.
