Responsibilities

Provide technical support for DTRA/DoD programs for assessing the effects of EM threat environments, including electromagnetic pulse (EMP) and high power microwave (HPM)/radio frequency (RF) threats, on DoD electronic equipment, systems and critical infrastructures. Incumbent assesses technology alternatives and executes R&D objectives.

Duties include:

    Provides technical support to the Chief, High Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP) portfolio. Applies scientific knowledge of the physical processes involved in hostile EM environments to include nuclear weapons detonations and HPM/RF threats, their interaction with the atmosphere, and effects on electronic equipment and systems; develops methodologies for evaluating individual and combined EM environment effects; and develops standards and/or protection technologies to reduce the EM vulnerabilities of electronic equipment, systems and critical infrastructure.
  • Identifies need for scientific investigations disclosed through interaction with DoD, Service staffs and operating agencies, or through individual recognition of quantitative voids in knowledge due to insufficiency of prior R&D or problem areas revealed in existing research programs. Acquires knowledge through review, study, analysis and evaluation of data obtained individually and collectively through personal contact with systems designers, system operators of Service/DoD staff agencies, reports of special task groups; reports of test and analysis/assessment activities; test observations, theoretical assessments. Keeps abreast of latest scientific theories, experiments, and technology trends which may have bearing upon specialized activities of the division and upon tactics and strategies for the employment of nuclear weapons that are current or anticipated.
  • Develops concepts for R&D programs including methods for conducting R&D investigations, special techniques, and innovative approaches and determines whether such methods can be correlated or combined with other research activities which are in the planning, development, or execution stage. Evaluates ideas for highest probability of success in terms of meeting objectives and value of data to be obtained in relationship to its costs, timeliness of achievement and other factors.
Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Nuclear Engineering, Physics, Math, or related fields (required)
  • PhD in Nuclear Engineering, Physics, Math, or related fields (desired)
  • Requires TS clearance with SCI eligibility
  • Effective writing, verbal communications and critical thinking
