The Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights invites applications for the position of Major Gifts Officer, to be based in New York. The Young Center protects and advances the rights and best interests of unaccompanied and separated immigrant children in the United States through its two programs: the Child Advocate program and the Policy program. The Child Advocate program provides independent, best interests guardians ad litem for immigrant children pursuant to the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act and the Violence Against Women Act. The Policy program advocates with legislators, federal agencies, and other stakeholders to ensure that federal laws, policies, and practices promote consideration of immigrant children’s best interests—their safety and well-being, with due regard for their expressed wishes—in all decisions. The organization is headquartered in Chicago, and operates programs in Chicago, Harlingen, Washington DC, New York, Houston, San Antonio, Phoenix, and Los Angeles.
The Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights is seeking a strategic, passionate, performance-driven Major Gifts Officer to join a collaborative, engaged, and growing fundraising team. Reporting to the Development Director, this newly created Major Gifts Officer position will be responsible for generating and executing strategies to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward prospects and existing donors with the capacity to give at the 4- to 6-figure level. The MGO will also be responsible for coordinating an annual benefit hosted by two major donors in New York, including host committee support, donor outreach, communications design, and event planning. The Young Center has experienced significant donor growth in the past year, making this an exciting moment to join our committed team in support of critical immigrant children’s rights work.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manage a portfolio of 100-125 donors and prospects, including the qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individual gifts at the 4- to 6-figure level
Define strategies to achieve the Young Center’s overarching revenue goals through major gifts
Design and manage programs and campaigns that produce individual gifts of $1,000 to $100,000
Enlist and support board members, donors, and volunteer fundraising leadership, including Host Committees, to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major donors
Develop collateral to prepare board members and volunteer fundraising leadership to make successful major gifts asks
Assist with the conception, logistics, and planning of special events related to major giving, including the Young Center’s annual New York benefit
Collaborate with other staff to create materials, including solicitation letters, proposals, and donor recognition pieces, that increase our fundraising potential and efficacy
Partner to maintain an organized system for donor stewardship by updating donor records, contact reports, and tasks, as appropriate (note: the MGO is not responsible for gift entry)
Communicate regularly with donors and prospects to ensure high levels of engagement
Work collaboratively and closely with Young Center staff in multiple departments to coordinate donor site visits, and to compile donor requested information and data
Engage donors and prospects at events and other venues as part of the cultivation process
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: We are seeking an exceptional professional with 4-6 years of fundraising experience. We are looking for a unique set of characteristics:
Minimum of four (4) years in prospect management and direct individual face-to-face solicitations for social justice, education, or similar nonprofit organizations required
A proven track record in closing gifts from $1,000 – 99,999
Excellent verbal and written communications and presentation skills, grounded in compelling storytelling
Knowledge of fundraising analytics, metrics, and reporting methodologies preferred
Experience working with donor database software preferred, preferably Raiser’s Edge
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Outlook required
Ability to work independently and collaboratively, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and take ownership of the job
Highly organized, detail oriented, ability to maintain a high level of follow through, confidentiality, and an ethical approach to fundraising
Familiarity with immigration, child welfare, or juvenile justice issues a plus
Planned giving experience a plus
Availability to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings as called for by events
Bachelor’s degree
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Physical demands include regular attendance; keyboarding; sitting for long periods (at least 5 hours a day); driving. Ability to use computer, telephone, and copy machine. Ability to travel by plane, car and other conveyances within U.S.
