Job Summary

This is a summer research internship focusing on computational materials design, or experimental materials processing and characterization, or responsible innovation as related to manufacturing. Available projects are: i) computational design and analysis of two-dimensional materials with the goal of developing new synthetic approaches to stabilize ultrathin materials with exceptional properties (Prof. Hu); ii) synthesis of new oxide semiconductors as thin films and characterization of their electrical and optical properties (Prof. May); iii) developing a fundamental understanding of nanomaterial colloid systems balanced with practical impact on the development of manufacturable materials and devices (Prof. Creighton); iv) articulating a set of best practices for implementing Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) principles into basic materials science and related fields with high potential for industrial and commercial applications (Prof. Ottinger). The student will carry out research tasks, learning the needed methological skills, and communicate the results with the research mentor.

Essential Functions

  • Read literature to develop an understanding of the background concepts and state of the art in the field.
  • Summarize academic articles in the social sciences and evaluate best practices for implementing responsible research and innovation principles into materials science and development (social science project).
  • Design and carry out experiments in the synthesis and manufacturing of new materials, including oxide semiconductors or colloidal systems (materials project).
  • Employ computational methods to identify synthetic conditions for realizing new 2D materials and to predict candidates for targeted functional properties (materials project).
  • Communicate results with members of the Drexel AEO project, including other students and faculty.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • HS Diploma or GED.
  • Currently enrolled as a college student pursuing a STEM degree.

  • Hybrid/Flexible Work Arrangement - Philadelphia, PA

Additional Information

This is a full-time, temporary position classified as non-exempt. The pay offered is based on the successful candidate's qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
