Job Description
The Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights invites applications for the position of full-time Director of Finance, to be based in Chicago or New York City.
 

ABOUT THE YOUNG CENTER

The Young Center for Immigrant Children's Rights is a national organization dedicated to protecting and advancing the rights and best interests—safety and well-being—of immigrant children in the United States. The immediate focus of the Young Center’s work is to serve as Child Advocate (guardian ad litem for children in immigration proceedings) for unaccompanied and separated immigrant children pursuant to the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act and the 2013 Violence Against Women Act. Our role is to identify and advocate for the best interests of immigrant children both while they are in federal custody and after they are released, applying federal and state law and long-recognized principles of the best interests of the child. The Young Center also does policy work, advocating with legislators, federal agencies and other stakeholders to promote consideration of the best interests of the child in all decisions concerning immigrant children and to create a dedicated juvenile immigrant justice system that treats children as children. The Young Center has programs in Houston, San Antonio, Harlingen, Chicago, New York, Washington DC, Phoenix and Los Angeles.

The Administrative Department of the Young Center supports a national organization of 70+ employees. The Department manages the administrative function of the organization, including finance, compliance, IT, human resources, vendor management, and facilities. Based in Chicago, the Director of Finance manages the organization’s finance function with the strong support of an Accounting Manager. The role is new to a growing department and will likely evolve over time. This position reports to the Managing Director and supervises two finance employees.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Management
  • Supervise finance department employees, including training and development, performance management and workflow, and support/issue resolution
  • With Managing Director, plan and set department priorities and strategies
  • Working with outside consultants as needed, revise and oversee implementation of updated finance and accounting policies, procedures, and controls; establish financial operating procedures reflective of new department structure
  • With Accounting Manager, maintain internal controls to ensure the reliability and integrity of financial and accounting information
  • Monitor, analyze and review cost allocations, updating methodology as required
  • Coordinate all financial activities, including banking relationships and investment activities
  • Monitor and control financial accounts to ensure Young Center is maximizing cash and investment rate of return in compliance with Board policy
  • Interface with senior management to provide training and guidance on accounting controls and procedures
  • Communicate the organization’s financial position effectively to non-fiscal persons

Financial Analysis, Strategy and Budgeting
  • Conduct cost-benefit analyses to support business decision-making around programmatic initiatives, employee compensation, expansion planning, and occupancy needs
  • With Accounting Manager, co-lead the annual budgeting process to produce a budget aligned with the organization's goals and strategic priorities; monitor budget to actual results throughout the year
  • Coordinate with Managing Director in preparing annual budget for Board submission, with narrative on results, variances to plan, trends and key metrics
  • Provide financial analytical support for evaluating capital purchases and leases
  • Teach, coach, and support staff to ensure they have the financial information and knowledge necessary to do their jobs effectively
  • Approve budgets for grant proposals and contracts
  • Oversee and provide analysis on grant budgeting within the strategic planning process
  • Provide governance-level reporting for Board review and decision-making efforts
  • Coordinate interaction between Finance and Development teams

Audit & Tax
  • Supervise and support Accounting Manager in working with outside accounting firm on audit and state/federal tax returns
  • Review 990 tax returns for accuracy and presentation to the Board
  • Ensure current public financial information is made available to all external sources and sites
  • Ensure that current accounting standards and legal requirements are met
  • Remain current on audit best practices as well as state, federal and local laws regarding company operations

Other
  • Support to Board with regards to investment activity/strategy and management
  • Represent organization to banks, financial partners, institutions, investors, public auditors and officials

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • 7+ years of highly relevant experience (nonprofit sector, finance and accounting), including at least 3 years managing a team
  • Solid manager with emphasis on team building, staff development, timely delivery, attention to detail, and prioritizing workflow to meet critical deadlines
  • Understanding of general business matters, including budget development, financial reporting, cash management, business taxes, banking, and debt financing instruments; ability to balance the delivery of programs against the realities of budget constraints
  • Strong and expansive background in executive management, particularly financial and operational management, in-depth knowledge of accounting rules and IRS regulations
  • Experience with conducting financial planning and budget modeling
  • Excellent case/project management skills and critical thinking skills (proactive, creative, operates with a sense of urgency, meets deadlines, obtains outcomes)
  • High-level organizational and communication (verbal and written) skills; intense attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment
  • Proficiency in Excel and familiarity with accounting software systems, comfort working with technology platforms and databases
  • High school diploma required, college degree preferred
     

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience—lived, volunteer, or professional—with immigration matters
  • Nonprofit accounting certification or degree 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Physical demands include regular attendance, keyboarding, sitting for long periods (at least 5 hours a day), driving. Ability to use computer, telephone, and copy machine. Ability to travel by plane, car and other conveyances within U.S. Occasional lifting for event setup/preparation.

For this role, the starting salary range is mid 80s to high 90s, based on experience and location. The position includes excellent health insurance coverage for employee and dependents at no cost to the employee, a 401k plan with employer match, and paid vacation and sick time, among other benefits.
