BMT Designers & Planners, Inc. (BMT) is seeking a Hull, Mechanical and Electric (HM&E) Maintenance Technician to provide repairs and maintenance and upgrades to Coast Guard (CG) small boats ranging from 18 to 65 feet. Applicants must have experience troubleshooting mechanical, electrical and hull maintenance, configuration and logistics problems on the following (but not limited to) systems: diesel engines, hydraulics, 12V & 24 V electrical distribution and control systems, boat mechanical and electrical systems, and hulls systems. This position requires an individual that is a dependable, self-starter, who is team oriented, able to work independently, committed to safety and quality and providing high caliber customer support. This is a SCA contract position. Responsibilities include but not limited to:
Inspecting boats to identify HM&E repairs and verifying configuration that conform with work specifications and quality
Evaluating engineering problems and recommend solutions that represent a cost-benefit to the client
Installation, maintenance, testing and troubleshooting of HM&E equipment and systems
Researching parts for maintenance/repair and overhaul of HM&E boat equipment and recommend changes to maintenance practices to increase the reliability of the equipment
Towing boats as needed
Must provide own tools to perform routine and corrective maintenance on multiple platform types
Work Location: Portsmouth, VA
Travel: Occasional

QUALIFICATIONS:
High School diploma required
Specialty school training in maintenance of shipboard equipment and systems preferred. CG or U.S. Navy (USN) shipboard maintenance school training highly desirable
ABYC certification highly desirable
Welding and forklift certifications a plus
5 – 10 years’ HM&E shipboard repair and maintenance experience required. CG or USN shipboard maintenance experience highly desirable
Knowledge of commercial and federal government equipment specifications and experience researching parts to comply with requirements is required
Experience with troubleshooting 12V & 24V electrical distribution systems and use of multi-meters, voltmeters, voltage testers, ammeters, ohmmeters, and other electrical testing tools is highly desirable
Experience towing boats and an excellent driving record. Copy of current driving record required
Familiarity with launching, recovering, towing and operating various types of watercraft a plus
Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal/no oversight and with a multidisciplinary team to investigate and resolve technical mechanical issues and complete detail-oriented tasks on schedule is required
Strong listening, verbal and written communication skills are required to effectively communicate with leadership and team membersand generate clear and concise technical reports
